Ein komprimiertes Overview

Abstract

Ziel dieses Beitrags ist die komprimierte Zusammenschau der bisherigen Forschung zur Definitionspluralität von Religion innerhalb der Religionswissenschaft. Zwar wird dabei keineswegs der Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit gestellt, sehr wohl jedoch einige der wichtigsten Positionen zur Problematik der Religionsdefinition vorgestellt. Hierdurch kann der kaum noch überschaubaren Vielfalt an etlichen Deutungsvorschlägen von Religion Abhilfe geschaffen und die Option der Fokussierung auf zentrale Ansätze und Methoden für künftige Arbeiten im Sinne eines effizienten Umgangs mit zeitlichen Ressourcen und der Erleichterung des Einstiegs in sowie der Fokussierung auf die wesentlichen Ansätze inmitten der Beschäftigung mit eine solche wichtige und doch vielfältige Thematik sichergestellt werden.

The aim of this paper is to provide a brief overview of existing research on the plurality of definitions of religion within the field of religious studies. While it does not claim to be exhaustive, it does present some of the most important positions on the issue of defining religion. By doing so, the paper addresses the overwhelming diversity of interpretive proposals for religion and facilitates the focus on central approaches and methods for future work. This is intended to ensure efficient use of time resources and ease the introduction to the essential approaches of this important and diverse topic. For better illustration, the focus is placed on a brief exemplary overview of the early history of Christianity up to the Middle Ages, followed by a short reflection on religion within Enlightenment discourse. This endeavor is undertaken through the presentation of selectively chosen events and developments that are crucial for understanding the broader historical contexts. Thus, the recourse to historical knowledge about Christianity serves a process-based representation instead of a chronological listing of major individual events. Through this process-based historical representation, a potential reference point for the evolving definitions of religion can be shown, ultimately contributing significantly to a better understanding of the definitional issues of religion within religious studies.
